‘Stained 2.0’ is a collection of wooden panels for interiors and furniture, stained using natural dyes. The collection consists of 9 modular 3 part stools which are designed such that the different colour parts can be interchanged with one another. They can be used as solid accents against a patterned panel or as the main focus against a plain wall.
Synthetic dyes are created by combining chemical compounds rather than naturally occurring components like those in natural dyes. Although these are available in a range of bright and long lasting colours, the chemicals in synthetic dyes are harmful to humans as well as to the environment. Workers exposed to synthetic dyes daily, without the right equipment or appropriate ventilation, tend to experience serious health problems. Additionally, the harmful by-products of the chemicals used are polluting water sources, emitting poisonous air and thus, wreaking havoc on local ecosystems.
On the contrary, natural dyes are biodegradable, non-toxic and non-allergenic. Provided they are processed in a way that avoids the use of harmful chemicals during the dyeing and finishing process, they have a much lower environmental impact than synthetic dyes. Root, stem, flowers, leaves, bark of various plants, minerals and vegetables are all sources of natural dyes, which are considered safe for the environment. The use of natural dyes helps in preventing pollution, and the water after usage can be used in gardening.
